A Marine never says die. Neither does his princess.
Battle lines are drawn when sheltered debutante Meridian Daly moves across the hall from grumpy former special forces Marine Callan Brand. Situated a bit closer than advertised to 'crime alley', Meridian’s neighbor finds himself grudgingly guarding the pampered princess out of habit. But with her sharp wit and killer curves, he can’t help but surrender to temptation…
When their relationship evolves from casual courtship to something more, Callan finds that Meridian's already discovered his closely-guarded secret. But can he let go of his pride, and tell her the whole truth of who he is and what he’s done—in the name of honor and country?
As Callan’s scars start to reveal themselves, his life spirals beyond the careful control that's helped him survive—and kept those he cares about safe.
From him.
But this tough-in-a-tiara princess won't back down, even in Callan’s darkest hours. And Meridian just might prove to be more tenacious than a never-say-die Marine!
A military romcom that reminds us snipers study “stalking” as part of their specialty. And that asking for help can sometimes take the courage of a hero.

Review

Losing My Breath by J Rose Black

I am very excited to have been afforded the opportunity to review Losing My Breath by J Rose Black, a contemporary romance of opposites attract. It was such a sweet story with really lovely characters and a relationship that felt real.

FMC Meridian Daly is sweet and patient with hints of more. Unfortunately, all we see are hints. She’s lovely and holds her own, but the narrative doesn’t delve deep into her character. I wish we did because I can tell that there is so much more going on that we just can’t see. It might be because this is told third-person POV with a focus on our MMC, Callan Brand, instead of getting dual first-person POVs.

That said, what really makes this romance work and stand out from others is Callan. He desperately clings to a routine. A steady pattern. This is the only way Callan knows to survive and keep present. As a former Marine who believes his problems are his own, Callan is an absolute closed book to his friends, to Meridian, despite how badly he doesn’t want to be. We see his inner struggles and the lapses of time. The more he wants to be real with Meridian, the harder it becomes to fight what he’s had to become to survive warfare.

If you are looking for a slowburn romance where the major conflict is internal instead of miscommunication or other person drama, definitely give Losing My Breath by J Rose Black a read!

Memorable Quotes

“But there was a time before her. And time would pass the same after she moved on. People, like events, tended to mark the passage of time along the roadways of life.”
